Biomedical Research and Data Specialist at Wayne State University
Katherine G. Akers is the biomedical research and data specialist at Shiffman Medical Library at Wayne State University (WSU). Katherine leads data-related initiatives across the WSU library system and supports the research and publishing activities of WSU School of Medicine faculty, residents, and students. She has a bachelor’s degree in psychology from Missouri State University, a PhD in behavioral neuroscience from the University of New Mexico, and worked as a postdoctoral researcher in neuroscience at the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto. Her research on the links between hippocampal function and learning and memory has been published in esteemed journals including Science, Nature Communications, and PNAS. Katherine entered the librarianship profession through a Council on Library and Information Resources (CLIR) Postdoctoral Fellowship at Emory University and the University of Michigan. She is the Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of the Medical Library Association and is active in professional organizations including the Medical Library Association (MLA) and the Metropolitan Detroit Medical Library Group (MDMLG).
