NEJM’s Social Media Guru Offers Advice to Tweeting Librarians
March 25, 2019

Are you new to tweeting? Eric Wheeler, NEJM’s content engagement manager, has some advice for medical librarians who want to write tweets that get noticed. Not surprisingly, his answer came in the form of a tweet.
Here’s some more of his advice:
- Don’t go hashtag crazy. Try to keep it to two or fewer, and make sure the hashtags are fairly active, which means that people are regularly searching for them and will see your tweet.
- Specificity is key when creating hashtags. Think “medical education,” not “education.”
- Keep retweets to a minimum. The majority of your tweets should be original content.
Finally, how often should you tweet? As much as you can, advises Wheeler. “There’s no such thing as over-tweeting.”
